LIBRARY SKILLS REVIEW GRADES K-2

Practice Library Skills

Using Call Numbers

We have about 10,000 books in our libraries.  We use call numbers to keep them organized.  Check out the books in your house.  Ask an adult or older brother or sister to help you read the author's name.  Using pencil, paper or building materials, make call numbers for the book using this recipe:

Fiction Picture Books:  E / First Letter of Author's Last Name

Fiction Chapter Books:  FIC / First 3 Letters of Author's Last Name

Parts of a Book Practice

Choose a favorite book.  Show a family member the following parts:

- front cover     - back cover    - spine   - title page

Nonfiction / Informational Text Features

Find a nonfiction book to read.  Use the table of contents to find a chapter that you're interested in reading first.  Use the index to find a keyword then go to that page to read information related to that keyword.  Use the glossary to learn the definitions of important words you might not know.

ABC Order

Our fiction books are in ABC order by the author's last name.  Practice ABC Order with this game:  ABCYA Alphabetize
